The Rice Husk Cup is made from repurposed rice husks, a by product of the food industry, which is mixed with polypropylene. Rice husks are the outer shell of a grain of rice, which is removed after the rice is harvested. The rice husks are then usually burned to dispose of them. As rice is harvested on such a scale, the burning of rice husks is particularly polluting to the atmosphere. Huski Home prevent rice husks from being burned by repurposing them into the Travel Cup. Polypropylene is mixed with the rice husks to bind them together. Huski Home use the least polypropylene possible without the rice husks disintegrating. They have looked at lots of different materials to use to bind the rice husks and have found polypropylene to be the most sustainable without leaching into the drink. The polypropylene is made from natural polyolefin resins, which allows it to biodegrade.

In the UK we use around 7 million disposable coffee cups every day. That's 2.5 billion every year! Despite being made from paper, most single use coffee cups are lined with a thin layer of plastic. This is to make the cup waterproof, but also makes them extremely difficult to recycle, so the vast majority of them end up in landfill, and 182 million of them end up polluting our streets, countryside and oceans every year. By switching to a reusable travel cup, you're preventing potentially thousands of single use cups going to landfill. You're also preventing waste rice husks from being burned and harming the environment.

The Rice Husk Travel Cup is extremely hard wearing and should last for many years with the right care. The Cup isn't suitable for home composting, but will break down in industrial composters. The anti-slip disk at the bottom of the Cup must be removed first and placed in your normal household waste.
