The Bamboo Charcoal Water Filters from ecoLiving are a simple, natural, plastic free way to filter impurities out of your tap water. Bamboo Charcoal has an incredibly porous structure, allowing it to work like a sponge and absorb impurities into its pores. The Filters will absorb all kinds of impurities, such as chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides, surfactants and hormone-disruptors, leaving behind clean, tasty, refreshing water.
The Filters are really easy to use. You’ll need 3 – 4 pieces for every litre of water that you want to filter.
Wash in running water to remove powder (do not use detergent).
Boil for 10 mins in a pan of water to sterilise & allow to cool and dry.
Place in a jug and fill with tap water (charcoal may float when new but it will tend to sink after a week or so of use).
Leave for 8 hours or more for best results. You can leave it in the fridge to chill if you like. It’s then ready to drink.
Re-sterilise once a week by repeating step 2.
Replace with new charcoal after around 2-6 months.
After using the Bamboo Charcoal Water Filters for 2 to 6 months, don’t throw them away! Charcoal also regulates moisture, reduces odours, inhibits mould and keeps food fresh. You can be creative and give your charcoal a second life, for example in:
Mouldy kitchen and bathroom corners
Places you keep food and fruits (e.g. the fridge, breadbin, fruit bowl)
Smelly places (e.g. the fridge, toilet, shoes)
Places you want to keep very dry (e.g. chests of drawers)
Make sure the pieces are completely dry before re-using. If you place them in a mild environment like in a chest of drawers, you can more or less use forever. In tougher places like the bathroom or the fridge, the charcoal may start looking a bit tired after a few months. Occasionally put them out in the sun and let them breathe if you want to keep them in good condition. Re-use for 6-12 months.
We know how difficult it can be to tell how much of an impact what you are buying has on the environment, and what effect switching to a more sustainable product has, so we have found out and compiled all of this information for you below.
The ecoLiving Bamboo Charcoal Water Filters replace plastic water filters.
The Filters are made from sustainably sourced bamboo, which is carefully burned in clay kilns to create charcoal.
Water filters all rely on a cartridge that is made from plastic. Although some manufacturers provide recycling facilities for these cartridges, they still eventually contribute to plastic waste, as the plastic can only be recycled so many times. The cartridges also come packaged in single use plastic, which is often difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfill.
Using Bamboo Charcoal Water Filters however is a zero waste solution. The bamboo that they are made from is sustainably sourced, and grows very quickly. When the Filters are no longer suitable for water, they can be used all around the house to regulate moisture, reduce odours, inhibit mould and keep food fresh, and at the end of their life they are fully compostable.
The Water Filters are packaged in a reusable natural cotton bag.
After 2 - 6 months of filtering water, the Charcoal Filters can be used all around the house. They are great at absorbing moisture and smells, so try using them in the fridge, in shoes, in the bathroom or in a chest of drawers. Once they are finally ready to dispose of, simply crush the Filters and bury them in your garden or mix them in with your compost, where it will help aerate the soil and aid with water retention.
