3 Great Cocktails to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration held on 5th May to commemorate the anniversary of Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It’s a great day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, and what better way to do that than with some traditional Mexican cocktails?

Here are three easy to make cocktails to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with. If you want to add a bit more authentic flare to your drink, they all work great with a traditional Mexican citrus juicer!

Margarita

Ingredients

  • 50ml tequila
  • 25ml lime juice or 1 freshly squeezed lime
  • 20ml triple sec (Cointreau works great)
  • Salt
  • 2 lime wedges
  • Ice

How to Make

  1. Rub one lime wedge around the rim of a glass, sprinkle a few teaspoons of salt over a saucer, and dip the rim of the glass into the salt so that the entire rim is covered.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then add the tequila, lime juice and triple sec. Shake until the outside of your shaker feels cold.
  3. Strain the cocktail mix into your salted glass over fresh ice. Serve with a wedge of lime.

 

Paloma

Ingredients

  • 50ml tequila blanco
  • 10ml agave syrup
  • 10ml lime juice (or half a freshly squeezed lime)
  • 60ml pink grapefruit juice (or a third of a freshly squeezed grapefruit)
  • Soda water
  • Salt
  • 2 Pink grapefruit wedges

How to Make

  1. Rub one pink grapefruit wedge around the rim of a glass, sprinkle a few teaspoons of salt over a saucer, and dip the rim of the glass into the salt so that the entire rim is covered.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then add the ice, tequila, agave syrup, lime juice and pink grapefruit juice. Shake until the outside of your shaker feels cold.
  3. Strain the cocktail mix into your salted glass, add some fresh ice cubes and top up with the soda water. Garnish the edge of the glass with a fresh wedge of grapefruit.

 

Chelada

Ingredients

  • 330ml bottle of Mexican beer (we use Corona)
  • 25ml lime juice or 1 freshly squeezed lime
  • Salt
  • 2 lime wedges
  • Ice

How to Make

  1. Rub one lime wedge around the rim of a glass, sprinkle a few teaspoons of salt over a saucer, and dip the rim of the glass into the salt so that the entire rim is covered.
  2. Add some ice cubes to the salted glass, pour in the lime juice, and top off with the beer.
  3. Garnish the rim with a fresh lime wedge and serve.
